International


  • No Lost Generation initiative has been launched by UN and partners to save millions of Syrian Children from loosing generation amidst the civil war.
  • 71st Golden Globe Awards were announced at Los Angeles on 11 January 2014.
  • Sheikh Hasina along with her Cabinet of 49 Ministers was sworn-in before President Abdul Hamid on 12 January 2014.


National

  • Government has launched the nation’s first comprehensive adolescent health programme named Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram.
  • The Kelkar Committee submitted the first part of its report on 8 January 2014.
  • IRDA constituted Suresh Mathur Panel to suggest ways for improving FDI in insurance sector.
  • SC has directed the Government to place the report of Justice Shah Commission on illegal mining in Odisha and Jharkhand to it by 27 January 2014.
  • Karnataka became the first State in India to provide Universal Health Coverage to its population.
  • Center has decided to provide additional wage employment of 50 days beyond stipulated 100 days under MGNREGA to ST households in forest areas.

  • BOJ and RBI concluded an agreement for expansion of the maximum amount of the Bilateral Swap Agreement (BSA) to 50 billion dollars.

Business


  • China decided to be one of the partners in the proposed National Investment and Manufacturing Zones (NIMZ) in Andhra Pradesh . Chittor, Medak and Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh will be the centre of the NIMZ.
  • Facebook acquired Bengaluru-based Little Eye Labs for 90 crore rupees
  • Seventh Global Insurance Summit was held at Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh. The summit was organised by National Council on Insurance of Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM).
  • SEBI has made it compulsory for all investments into Collective Investment Scheme funds to be made through banking channels and not in cash.
  • The South Korean steel maker POSCO has received environment clearance from MoEF for a steel plant worth 52000 crore rupees in Odisha.
  • India and Canada has signed a Letter of Intent for co-operation in Iron and Steel Sector.
  • World Bank in its Global Economic Prospects Report forecasted that economy of India will grow by just 6 percent in 2014-15.


Banking

  • A panel of Reserve Bank of India led by Nachiket Mor has suggested to set-up specialized banks to cater to the low income households. These banks will ensure that every citizen have a bank account by 2016.
  • Reserve Bank of India has allowed the Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) to lend up to 75 percent of the value of gold.

Sports


  • India defeated Pakistan to win 2014 Under-19 Asia Cup in the final match played at Sharjah cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi .
  • Sanil Shetty and Ankita Das won their maiden men’s and women’s singles championship on 12 January 2014.
  • Nikhat Zareen won gold medal at the third Nations Cup International Boxing Tournament.
  • Vijay Zol selected as the Captain of India to lead the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

  • Israel’s former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon died on 11 January 2014.

Awards


  • Platform number one of Gorakhpur railway station of Uttar Pradesh has entered into the Limca Book of Records as longest rail platform in the world.
  • Andhra Pradesh bagged the Oil and Gas Conservation Award for the best performance among the big States.
  • P.K.Goyal, Director of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) was awarded the Best CFO Award.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo won the FIFA Ballon d’Or award for 2013
  • Pranab Mukherjee presented the Sunil Gangopadhyay Memorial Award of 2012 and 2013 to Nirendranath Chakraborty and Sankha Ghosh, respectively
