  • Indian Coast Guard Ship Abhinav was commissioned in Kochi by the Director General of Coast Guard Vice Admiral Anurag G Thapiyal.
  • State Cabinet of Goa approved a proposal of increase in the reservation of OBC from 19.5 to 27 percent for employment in the government sector.

  • RBI has allowed foreign investors to buy shares of South Indian Bank as foreign shareholding in the bank has gone below the prescribed limit.

  • Netherlands won the Hero Hockey World League Final by defeating New Zealand 7-2 at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi.

Deaths


  • Famous Marathi writer and Social activist, Namdeo Dhasal died in Mumbai.
  • Famous Bengali actress Suchitra Sen died in Kolkota on 17 January 2014. She was 82.
  • Sunanda Pushkar was found dead in a five-star hotel room, which police believe is a case of suicide.

  • Taiwanese poet Yushi was awarded the Thiruvalluvar award on Thiruvalluvar Day
  • Deepika Padukone and Farhan Akhtar won the Best Actress(Ram-leela) and Best Actor(Bhaag Milkha Bhaag) awards respectively.
  • Abhishikta S Shetty of Karnataka won the 11th Edition of the Miss South India 2014 pageant at the Le Meridien in Coimbatore.
  • Cyrus Mistry won the DSC prize 2014 for South Asian literature for his book Chronicles of a Corpse Bearer
